How a Squinting Dog Inspired a $3 Million Company

Doggles for Doggies! Yes our faithful friends suffer from sensitive eyes too and Midknight their Pet Collie was their inspiration and light bulb moment that has gone on to make their company over $3 Million in revenue - A great story and well done to Roni & Ken Di Lullo

Roni and Ken Di Lullo knew something was off when their dog Midknight kept missing the Frisbee during a game of fetch. In 1997, during a visit to the dog park near their San Jose, Calif., home, the couple noticed that Midknight was squinting. "He seemed to be sensitive to sunlight," Roni recalls.

On a lark, Roni retrofitted sports goggles to fit the border collie. In addition to improving his Frisbee performance, Midknight became the talk of the dog park. People were so amused by the goggles that Roni created a website to showcase photos of the pooch modeling his eyewear. "People love to see a dog wearing glasses," she says.
To her surprise, requests started coming in from other dog owners. "I had a full-time job [as a software developer] and never planned to do this as a business," Roni says. For each new order, she purchased a pair of sports goggles and revamped them to fit the four-legged customer of the moment. As sales grew, she realized her DIY method for creating what she had come to call "Doggles" was unsustainable.
The Di Lullos consulted eyewear manufacturers about developing prototypes, but the sizing didn't work for dogs.
Then a company in Taiwan agreed to make a custom product with a wide nose bridge and deep lens cup. In 2002 the couple placed an initial order for 30,000 pairs. In the midst of product development, Doggles were featured on DailyCandy and CNN. Soon after, PetSmart agreed to stock them in its stores. "That gave us the push to really make a go of it," Roni says.

Doggles makes two models: Originalz and ILS with interchangeable lenses. Both are designed to fit a range of pooches, from Chihuahuas to Great Danes. The designs have shatterproof, anti-fog lenses that block 100 percent of UV rays, and adjustable head and chin straps that keep the goggles secure on the dog's head.
In addition to PetSmart, Doggles sell for $16 to $20 per pair at Petco, Amazon and Target, as well as at 3,500 pet boutiques. The company also produces pet toys, clothing and other gear.
The cute factor aside, Doggles aren't just a novelty item: A consultation with a veterinary ophthalmologist helped the Di Lullos see that dogs could benefit from protective goggles following eye procedures; Doggles even makes prescription lenses for those who have undergone cataract surgery and lens removal. Doggles are also part of the uniform of many service animals, including those used by the U.S. military, which has purchased more than 1,000 pairs in the last decade. "Their handlers aren't dressing them up to look cute," Roni points out.
Expanding its vision helped Doggles reach revenue of $3 million in 2012. The growth has posed a challenge for the Di Lullos, who want to maintain a small-business culture while embracing new opportunities.
But that concern is a walk in the park compared to the challenge they face every spring and fall, when Doggles introduces its new products and colors. In an effort to entice fashion-forward dog owners into buying, Roni lines up canine catalog models for a photo shoot. And getting the dogs to sit still is, as we know, harder than herding cats.

readership and news outlets will republish your content on their sites)

38. Comment on other blogs and news articles to show your thinking/expertise, but also link people back to your blog

39. Make sure, when you use Twitter to promote your blog post, tweet it more than once.

40. Subscribe to SmartBrief newsletters, RSS feeds, and Google alerts in order to find ideas for new content (that’s how I found this blog!)

41. Post and link your content on the Delicious social bookmarking site. (This will again help spread your content by placing it on a highly trafficked site)

42. Try your hat at a guest blogger or two, this could add credibility to your site , especially if the person is influential in his or her space. Courtney Wiley of  iNgage Networks also made this suggestion

43.In the meta tags for your photos, make sure the labels/words are what you want them to be – search engines can’t “read” photos, only the labels/meta tags. Dave Heinrich from WebTechUniverse.com also contributed with this tip which is vital and I do this with every image in my posts

44. When people write a comment actually take the time to email them directly and thank them for the comment and if they ask a question, then answer it. You will find that this will create a WOW factor and spread the word about the blog. If you took 10-15 minutes a day to respond to 5 comments via email you would make great impact on over 1,500 people during a year who would each spread the word to potentially 1000′s more. This could be the making of a tribe!

45. Comment appropriately on the top blogs ranked by Google on the major key word or phrase you are trying to optimize for SEO. This will create a a link back to your site and linking is key to increasing your own rankings with search engines

46. Write a blog post listing some important bloggers in your industry (such as the top 5) and point out how they make their blogs successful and you might find they return the love!

47 Interlink to other posts in your blog when writing a post especially those that are relevant and have been successful (this again is great for SEO)

48. Outsource content development for sections of your blog that are appropriate such as ‘resource’ sections.

49. Update an original post that provides more value to your readers (this post is an example)

50. Take readers comments and include and promote them in your blog  (like we have just done)

51. Take a selection of your best blog posts and make an ebook out of it. Then distribute the ebook on the Amazon Kindle Store and Apple iBookStore. This will find you new readers for your blog. And you can monetize it in a whole new way by charging a dollar or two for your ebook. (Thanks to Vikram Narayam )

52. Collaborate with other Twitter users within your niche to promote each others content

53. Make sure that everyone within your company has their own Twitter account and promotes the blog and company social media accounts on that account

54. When speaking or presenting, record it on video and upload it to company YouTube channel. It will be a constant resource for clients as well as adding to your websites SEO.

55.  Make excerpts of  key points on the video and turn them into short blog posts.

56. On your YouTube channel make sure you have optimized the video for search engines through tags, key phrase in the description as well as the link to your blog in the  description section.

57. The SlideShare account where you have uploaded your PowerPoint presentation should also be optimized for search with your blog or website URL in your public profile

58. The Slideshare account should also have your top keywords and phrases in the  ”Public Profile” about section so that search is optimized.

59. Keep most blogs short with no more than 400-500 words as most people don’t have much time and will be only spending a minute or two on your blog (average time on this site according to Google Analytics is 1 minute and 39 seconds)

60. If embedding a video in the post again brevity rules with the rule of thumb now at a 1-2 minute video

61.  Take each post and post it on the New Digg (20 million visitors a month), it is quick and easy to do and will take you only a minute or two (it involves copying the URL and pasting it to Digg, add the headline and choose the section then hit

62. Take the results of your polls or survey and turn them into a blog post. A lot of people want know the results as over time the blog post is buried in the archives

63. Use a twitter app such as SocialOomph.com (Professional edition) to schedule tweets your posts on a regular basis. Another software application you can use is MarketMesuite.com which allows you to personally brand your scheduled tweets.

64. Collaborate and communicate with other successful bloggers in your niche especially those that enhance and add to your skill set (they will encourage and support you)

65. Implement an email acquisition strategy that includes a pop over form that hovers over the screen for first time visitors (offer free eBook or video tutorial as an incentive and a gift for people giving you their name and email address) . One platform that provides this is Aweber.

66. Another email subscriber tactic includes a suggestion to refer a friend to join the email list

67. Place a video on your Facebook fan page inviting visitors to subscribe.

68. Link to your blog on your Facebook fan page

69. On your email subscriber form don’t ask people for their life history keep it short and only ask for name and email address

70. On LinkedIn  Make sure your Profile is public with Your Blog, Website and Facebook pages entered in your Settings (Profile Section) where you are allowed 3 website URLs

71. On LinkedIn make sure you have blog widget loaded (this is at the bottom of your LinkedIn Home page by clicking on the +Add an Application Button) this will then display your blog and the 3 latest posts in a window on your home page for all visitors to your profile

72. Add the Twitter feeds application using the Tweets add on in the same section this will promote your blog posts when you tweet them

73. Promote your Slideshare presentations on LinkedIn using the Slideshare Presentations again in the +Add an Application button (remember your optimized Slideshare account will have your blog URL which will drivetraffic to your blog)

74. Get the latest information and ideas by creating alerts using Google Alerts on your favourite topics. For me that might be something like “Social Media Case Studies” so that any new content on the Web that fits that phrase will be fed to you by Google, either as it happens or daily. (Suggestion maybe create a separate dedicated email account eg alert@jeffbullas.com so that it doesn’t overwhelm your personal or business account

75. Hire a copy writer to hone your content for SEO (Search Engine Optimization) so that your key words and phrases that are important when potential readers and clients go looking online find “you” and not your competitor on Google’s search engine results page

76. Video interview successful people in your industry and then make it easy for them to share the interview with their network (this will surprise you as to how powerful this is in leveraging and spreading your content)

77. Run Ads in the sidebar such as  Deck ads.  ( you can make a few thousand a month off  ”The Deck” ads.if the traffic volumes are significant)

78. Bundle up the best blog posts about about your niche and turn it into a PDF book. You could sell the PDF for lets say $19. (37signals who took its own experiences as a web startup and published them on their corporate blog and monetized that over 2 years into a $750,000  revenue stream by publishing and then repackaging it)

79. Take the PDF and turn it into a paperback at a print on demand publisher Lulu.com. You can sell the paperback for $25 and they make a few more thousand a month on royalties. (37 signals book “Getting Real” was published from the PDF source material  and the paperback is currently ranked the 2nd best seller on Lulu)

80.Take the content from the book and produce a conference series. You could hold a few conferences a year and make about $50,000 per conference. (37signals has produced about 5 of these conferences) So if you add this all up:
  • $100,000 on The Deck ads
  • $350,000 on the “Getting Real” PDF
  • $65,000 on the “Getting Real” paperback
  • $250,000 on the “Getting Real” conferences (before that they were called Building of Basecamp).
Total $765,000 over a few years off the same content repackaged in a variety of ways.
This content was simply about insight and ideas about how they run their business.
So there it is, over $750,000 from Blog entries, PDF, paperback, and conferences.
To read more on this check out. “4 Ways To Make Money From Your Blog Content: A Case Study”
How could you adapt this model to your industry?

81. Take the content, expertise and network contacts that you have developed from your blog and produce a Webinar. Social Media Examiner have done this successfully twice and  have registered up to 2,000 people online and made over $900,000

82. Mount a video camera in your car if you are in an industry that involves getting out and about such as real estate and make a video blog while you are “on the job” (but not driving of course). Ian Watt from Vancouver does this and creates short video blog posts talking about the industry he is obviously passionate about.

83. Turn your blog content into an online course and publish it and sell it using applications such as wiziq.com, odijoo.com, litmos.com

84. Offer a premium paid newsletter for a low cost of $1.99. An example here is that a restaurant could offer a monthly newsletter with recipes for seasonal foods or a Gym could offer a weekly newsletter with keeping fit and staying healthy.

85. Use Alltop to promote your content.

86. Put a big button on your blog that invites and makes it easier for people to do “business” with you such as investing in your blog or collaborating in joint ventures..

87. Join as many Facebook active Facebook fan pages or groups relating to your blog topic as possible

88. Monitor your brand with Google Alerts or Tweetdeck so that you can thank people that publish your content and protect your brand from misconceptions.

89. Offer consulting services in your area of expertise that are highlighted and prominent on your blog.

90. “Persist” and don’t give up and your blogging journey may surprise you!

91. Place a LinkedIn share button next to your retweet and Facebook share buttons as a lot of  LinkedIn users now have 200-300 connections and a LinkedIn share can potentially have that many impressions per share

92. Consider having more perennial or evergreen content on your blog that doesn’t date and is timeless. The latest news posts are still useful but can quickly become out of date.

93. Write blog posts that answer the problems that your readers and viewers have in your industry niche. To read more on this check out “Why Solving Problems Beats Marketing

94. Write subtitles that keep people engaged with your content. If they just see a wall of text it is easy for readers to turn your blog off and go somewhere else. An example of this can  be found at this article “”Why Social Media and Traditional Marketers Should Stop Bitching” – and the first sub title is “The Challenge For Social Media”

95. Write how to posts, that make your site a constant resource for people. This will achieve two things 1. It will bring them back time and time again 2. It will increase readership time on your blog

96. Improve your writing by subscribing to writing blogs or attending writing classes.

97. Obtain a great domain name. This applies if your own name is already taken as a domain name. A writer friend of mine Nicholas Brasch recently started a blog called writer.com.au. How cool is that!! Oh yes check him out he is an awesome writer.

98. Find your writing voice. This is the type and style of writing that suits you and is you. It might be idiosyncratic and you may get critics but it will be authentic and if you write and blog that is what you need to be..”Real”

99. Make it easy for people to view your blog on a mobile phone as more people are read from smart phones that are connected to the internet. There are simple plugins for WordPress that enable you to do this in about 10 minutes. I have just checked my Google analytics and nearly 5% of my readers have raed my blog from a mobile platform in the last week. This trend will continue and the percentage will go up.
100. Install Google analytics (this can only be done if it is a self hosted account) this will highlight things that you can fine tune and improve.

101. Have a “contact us” form on your blog that makes it easy for people to contact you for those speaking, consulting and business opportunities.

102. Continue to follow people on Twitter in your industry niche  to build up your Twitter following. This gives you a larger audience to promote your blog to. For more on this read “Today’s Twitter Tip: How To Get Targeted Niche Followers”

103. Read all the time and different styles and types of writers. This will give you great ideas to write about and continue to position you as a thought leader as you continue to learn. Phillip Adams once said “Show me someone who reads a book a week and I’ll show you a good person”  and also I will show you a better writer.

104. Write about industry News – whats happening this week, this month

105. Learn how to write awesome headlines for your blog articles. It’s been reported that up to 50% of all tweets that are retweeted are due to the headline only! For more on how to do this read “Have you Been Making This Huge Mistake On Your Blog”

If you find you are getting frustrated and the writing is hard and some days it isn’t happening then remember this quote from Tolstoy the famous Russian author who wrote “War and Peace” .
“I don’t like writing but I love having written”
What other tips would you like to add? I look forward to hearing about your blogging tips.

Once you have discovered that “secret sauce” that provides you with the fuel and horsepower necessary to provide that energy, it becomes easier to then create the plans and then continue to build and maintain the blogging momentum, which we covered in part one and included the three initial steps that you need to take to build a strong foundation.

So passion, a plan and learning the blogging basics is just the start of the journey, you then need to come up with the ideas and then create the content that engages your audience.

Ideas or content can lie undiscovered for years in the vain hope that some one will stumble across them with a Google search. The most vital step after content creation in the blogger’s journey is to then learn the art of marketing.

The new social web provides that all important leverage  of “world of mouth”  to  reach and engage with a global audience.
In this article we will look at
Step 4: Creating content that engages your audience
Step 5: How to market to a global audience with social media
Step 6: Maintaining momentum

These final three steps will assist you in building a global and engaged audience for your blog.

Step Four: Creating Content that Engages Your Audience

The foundation for any long lasting engagement on the web that will keep people coming back is content that educates, inspires and solves problems.

Essentially there are 3 steps you need to consider in the process.
1. Come up with ideas for content consistently
2. Write headlines that will compel the reader to read
3. Structure the article so that they will keep on reading

1. Ideas for Content

Coming up with ideas  for content is a challenge for most bloggers.
So here are 17 Tips to help you assist you in coming up with ideas to create and develop content for your blog

17 Tips for Creating Content

  1. Read other top blogs and develop content on industry Trends – where is the industry going, what are the emerging hot segments
  2. Find out who your customers are and where they hang out and write and develop content that is then written in their language and publish it to those platforms. If you are writing for Gen Y then you will need to write in their language and publish to platforms like YouTube and Facebook. 11. Video interview successful people in your industry. Check out  ”Social Media and The CEO: Video Interview With Greg Savage Of Aquent“
  12. Turn the “how to” blog posts into short videos
  13. When you have a great idea, go straight to your “add new” button on your post section of your WordPress blog and write the headline and save it as a draft or write it down before you forget it. ( I also use my notes feature on my iPhone to catch those moments of inspired thought)
  14. Include a great iconic image at the start of the blog that catches the eye
  15. Case Studies are always popular to write about and not just your own
  16. Upload your Powerpoint presentations to Slideshare and then embed them in your Blog post this will allow people to view your PowerPoint presentations on the web anytime and anywhere
  17. Run polls and surveys on your blog

2. Headlines

You have the ideas for creating the content but how do you get them to read it? The short answer ….”write a great headline”!
So what are the important elements in creating and writing a “great headline” and why is it so important?
Why is a headline important?
  • Tests have shown that you can increase your conversion rate on a website or a link by 73% by the use of a compelling headline.
  • Did you know that on average, 8 out of 10 people will read headline copy, but only 2 out of 10 will go on to read the rest of the copy. This is the secret to the power of the headline, and why it so highly determines the effectiveness of the entire piece
  • Another test revealed that a good headline performed 259% better than the worst headline.
This means that up to nearly 3 times as many people would read your web page or view your video just through having spent some time ensuring that the headline is optimized.
So what are the basic requirements for writing that headline that will get people clicking and reading, viewing your content and copy whether that be video, presentation or text.

6 Headline Formulas

One way to start is to use a formula, so here are 6 headline types and examples  from Authority Blogger to get you started:
1. Get What You Want (In Health, Wealth, Relationships, Time and Lifestyle)
Example: “The Secret To Getting More Money For Your Property!”
2. Crystal Ball and History
Example: “10 Predictions on the Future of Social Media”
3. Problems and Fears
Example “Get Rid of Your Debt Once and For All”
4. Fact, Fiction, Truth and Lies
Example: “Little Known Ways To Make Money On The Stock Exchange”
5. How To, Tricks Of The Trade
Example: “How To Plan The Ultimate Holiday”
6. Best and Worst

Example: “The 10 Worst Mistakes Made by Bloggers
For more from the Authority Blogger blog here are 102 Proven Headline Formulas
Another very effective headline strategy is to use is ‘list’ headlines and these are some examples that I have used.

You will notice that it is a ‘list’ format and includes numbers. A mega list headline  is a large list such as the  50 Ways To Optimize Your Blog or the 102 Proven Headline Formulas and can be very effective. I have experimented with these types of headlines and they have produced some of my best blog traffic results.
Learning to get the basics of  headline writing will make a big difference to your website and blog traffic especially when used in your online marketing such as email and Twitter.
So how are your headline copywriting skills?

3. Structuring Your Content so it Begs to be Read

The reality though is that the headline is just the start!… you want your visitor to stay and  read the whole article rather than bounce out to another website in an era of ‘click and go’.
We live in the era of ever decreasing attention and the art of keeping the reader engaged has now become an ongoing creative and scientific experiment of verbal and visual seduction.

The Age of Skimming

So writing that awesome headline has made the reader turn up but then you have to continue to entice, tease and intrigue the reader with the promise of more information, possible entertainment or a solution to the problem so that they will read on.
Skimming the article is the norm and with so much information competing for everyone’s attention, honing those writing skills is required to ensure that the information your post promised in the headline is transparently and readily available as your readers eyes scan the page.

People are Seeking Answers

Readers are seeking solutions and answers to their problems. They are asking questions.
  • Will this video embedded in the article deliver the information I crave?
  • Will the embedded slideshare presentation provide content that will help me with my next corporate boardroom meeting that will impress my customer and my boss?
  • Will the rest of the article enlighten me or bore me?
The headline is important whether it is a Facebook news update and especially if it is on Twitter. Twitter has made the art of the headline more important than ever before because you only have 140 characters to tempt the potential reader to take action and click on the link that is embedded in your Tweet.

The Headline is the Start of the Seduction

What you need to realize is that the headline is the start of the seduction and your reader needs to be continually visually arrested to keep them on your page.
Here are a variety of tips and tactics to continue to lure the reader deeper into your article beyond the headline so that they will not just click away to somewhere else.

The Intro

The introduction is maybe the next most important element after the headline. This is an art rather than a science but there are some good tactics to ensure that you don’t lose them in the first sentence or paragraph. Mastering the art of copywriting can be arduous and the master copywriter Eugene Schartwz often spent days crafting the first 50 words of the sales copy and as a blogger you are in the business of selling your article one post at a time.
When writing the introduction these are some ideas to keep in mind.

1. Pose a Question
Challenging the reader to think engages their mind and makes them want to find out the answer.
2. Open with a Quote
This may inspire the reader to continue to read in the hope of finding out what lies beyond the next paragraph
“Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever” - Mohandas K . Gandhi
3. Provide a Personal and Powerful Story
The story teller has captivated people since fire was created and a personal or powerful story can be the honey to keep the reader and listener engaged whether that be around the campfire or within an article.
4. Quote an Enticing Fact or Statistic
If you are writing about Facebook it could be the fact that ”One in every eight minutes spent on the internet is on Facebook”  to draw the reader in.
5. Create Context
Lead into the main part of the article by creating the context for the rest of the story. Provide some background to the argument or solution you are about to put forward. It could be the condensed history of the topic or the facts and figures or the stating of the problem that needs solving.
6. Create a Mental Image
It could be a sentence opening with phrases such as  ’imagine this’  or ‘do you remember when’.
7. Analogies and Other Tricks
It could be a phrase such as “A writer without a blog is like a salesman without a telephone” that tempts and captures the readers attention.

Key Words:

This is one thing you should not ignore. What are the key words people will be looking for when they turn up. You also need to remember you are writing for two readers your audience and for the 1 million Google computer servers that are crawling and indexing your words, headlines and keywords. The challenge is to still write naturally but you need to be mindful of ‘Lord Google’.

Write Sub-Titles

Subtitles are your mini headlines that entice your reader to continue reading, they are teasers that may offer questions that promise more intriguing and inspiring content to follow.

Include Images

Images with screen shots with arrows and circles showing key points can be worth a thousand words and make learning clear and easy to follow through on. Make the solution a ‘no-brainer’.

Consider A Video

Sometimes a short 2 minute video can offer the reader a quick way to explain a concept or idea or solution that 500 words cannot convey. This could be embedded half way through the story. Remember you are writing for the web and rich interactive media is expected and demanded.

The Hyperlink

This is quite often overlooked and in a digital interconnected age the article that has hyperlinks promises a depth and a breadth of information that makes the reader want to explore. Links or additional resources at the end of an article that list valuable posts from your blog that are relevant are also valuable and encourage the reader to read more of your valuable blog content. I also recommend setting up the the links so they open up in a new browser window ensuring that the original page is still open and visible and waiting on their return.

Format For Scanning and Skimming

There is nothing more confronting than a wall of text that says to the reader..”If you want the information… good luck in finding it, because it may be buried here somewhere!”
So break it up into chunk sizes that is easy to digest and doesn’t create visual constipation.
This can be done in a variety of ways through

  • Italics
  • Call out box or block quote
  • Short paragraphs
  • Bullet points
  • A short numbered list

Don’t Forget the Call to Act

This might be a phrase such as
“What is one thing that you can do do today that you have learnt from this post?”

The Closing

Closing is important and the main thing to remember is to close the loop by tying it back to the beginning. It could be a statement or a question.

Step Five: How to Market to a Global Audience with Social Media

Social media marketing has at  its core the foundation of valuable, shareable content in all the various forms of rich media whether that be text, video or images.
People watch YouTube videos because they are entertaining, educational or just plain funny. Viewers turn up to your Slideshare account and take the time to view a PowerPoint presentation because the content is compelling. LinkedIn works well for personal branding because you are providing answers to your peers to questions in the Q&A section and providing updates that answers problems, informs and educates.
Twitter teases you to click on links that are engaging blog posts or news that is topical and timely. The knowledge economy is all about the content. Facebook is where most of your audience is online so content needs to be posted and updated to the social giants ecosystem.
Social media marketing is the most efficient way to spread your content and ideas to a global audience. The secret sauce is to allow you to create a ‘social media synergy’ that totals a sum far greater than the individual parts. Most people think that Facebook “is” social media but I would encourage you to use a multi-channel social media marketing approach.
This approach is to guide you to go beyond being just ‘Facebook Centric’ and provide substance, endurance and longevity to your on-line presence and digital assets. This will assist you in optimizing and integrating the multiple social media platforms listed below
Some of these tips are basic for some but this is a checklist that may assist you in synergizing your online presence and bring traffic and viewers to your global digital properties.

Step Six: Maintaining the Momentum

Maintaining momentum in any sphere of your life is a challenge whether it is a business, a relationship or as a blogger and there are no easy answers.
What I have discovered is that  if the combination of innate ability and passion that you discovered and drove you from day one are true to your purpose then maintaining momentum will not be difficult.
What I have also found helpful are 3 key activities to maintain the energy and the forward motion

Reading – It doesn’t matter if it is offline or online reading this provides new ideas that will keep the inspiration flowing

Sharing – Talking to your tribe of like minded people whether it is on Twitter or over a coffee or lunch will provide you with new insights and fuel to maintain the blogging momentum

Disrupting – Push your self into new areas that will challenge you and will keep you learning and motivated

Starting the journey is the easy part but true success is the found in persistence that will bring true self discovery and maybe a life that becomes a masterpiece.
